how to eat deep dish pizza in Chicago

So I normally don’t get into the nitty gritty of food in this blog, but most of the time, what you eat is one of the most important parts of a vacation. And seeing that it’s about pizza, and pizza just so happens to be one of my all-time favorite foods, I will make an exception. Besides, deep dish pizza is part of the whole Chicago experience. And to get to experience a piece of that pie (see what I did there?!) is definitely an experience like no other, especially for a NYC gal like me – who loves her New York Style pizza.

Some accounts say that Pizzeria Uno in Chicago invented the deep dish back in 1943. Others say that it was Rudy Malnati (father of Lou Malnati) in the 1950s. So while we won’t ever know for sure who exactly unleashed this amazing creation upon the world, I think a lot of us will agree that we’re pretty damn happy that they did!

Of course, every establishment serving this type of pizza will claim that they have the best in the biz. Since I only spent three full days in the Windy City, there were only so many places I could try (before gaining 10 pounds/getting sick of it/throwing it all up/any combination of those three). But these are the three that I did get a chance to try:

Lou Malnati’s:

Lou Malnati's 6
Half the Lou/half Malnati Chicago Classic

Giordano’s

Giordano's 8
Super Veggie: mushrooms, green peppers, onions, black olives, spinach, artichokes, broccoli)

Gino’s East

Geno's East 1
Half Jalapeño Blue/half Chi-talian Stallion

It was different having to eat my pizza with a fork in a knife. Not in a bad way, but I think I still prefer my thin crust!
