yeh nay ver forget your first time

First, you bend over. Then you take a slurp. No, that’s not a euphemism for anything. It’s actually the proper way to drink a glass of jenever.

Jenever is filled to the brim in these special tulip-shaped glasses and you must take a sip before you pick up the glass

Pronounced yeh-nay-ver, this drink is a liquor with a strong juniper flavor. It’s what gin was evolved from. Perhaps one of the most popular places in Amsterdam to get this from is Proeflokaal Wynand Fockink, which has been around since 1679. Proeflokaal is the Dutch word for “tasting room.” And that’s exactly what it was. Everyone working there is super knowledgeable and can recommend you a jenever (which they distill themselves, by the way) based on your taste preferences. Most seem to pair well with Jupiler, a Belgian pale ale.

They also have a store next door so you can bring a bottle of the Dutch gin home, if you want to expand your liquor cabinet.
