Chocolate and cheese. Two of Switzerland’s finest things. The Swiss Chocolate Train allows you to experience both of these in one day. The tour takes you on several stops, including one with free time in Gruyères. Here is what a 99 CHF ticket will get you (or if you have a Swiss travel pass, 69 CHF for a regular ticket, and 59 CHF for a first class…yes, first class is cheaper for some reason):

Starting in Montreux, the panoramic train trip starts off with a chocolate croissant and your choice of coffee or hot chocolate.

The next stop is at La Maison du Gruyère and learn about cheese-making. It’s an unimpressive museum but at least you get some cheese samples.

Take a 5-minute bus ride to Gruyères, where you have about 2 hours to explore the town. Make sure you check out HR Giger bar, an “Alien”-themed bar.

Head to the Cailler-Nestlé chocolate factory in Broc to see how some of their chocolates are made, and of course eat some chocolate. Their souvenir shop is also a good place to buy chocolates as gifts to bring back home, as it’s slightly cheaper than supermarkets. Plus they have flavors here you may not find in regular stores.

Tip – be sure to check their schedule here because during certain months, the tours do no operate everyday. You also need to reserve ahead of time.
