The Three Sisters, or Meehni, Wimlah and Gunneddoo, are a rock formation at Echo Point in the Blue Mountains. The aboriginal legend is that three sisters fell in love with three men from a rival tribe. But because they couldn’t marry outside of their tribes, the men went and captured the sisters. This sparked a war, so in order to protect the sisters, an elder witch doctor turned them into stone. He meant to turn them back afterwards but he was killed in battle, so the sisters now live forever as the rock version of themselves.
The Blue Mountains are located near the town of Katoomba, New South Wales. The blue hues are believed to be caused by the abundance of eucalyptus trees in that area. It has something to do with the oil that the trees emit and light refracting off of that. I tried reading into a more scientific explanation of that but not going to lie, it went right over my head. The mountains look blue. That’s all you need to know.
It’s about a two-hour drive from Sydney. If you’re thinking that two hours is a long drive just to see a bunch of rocks, there’s more to the mountains than just the Three Sisters. That’s just the tip of the iceberg (or should I say tip of the rock formation? It just doesn’t have the same ring to it)! Unfortunately, that was the only view we got to see of the Blue Mountains since we were on a tour, most of which was spent at the Jenolan Caves. So if you’re planning on doing any tours that include both sites, I would reconsider. You need at least a full day solely dedicated to the mountains just to get the basics covered. They even have a scenic cableway that gives you a panoramic view of everything. I’m sad I missed out on that but I guess it’s just another thing that I’ll have to add to my bucket list!
