Okay, so maybe it doesn’t sound like the most romantic location to exchange vows with your beloved, but at least it’s a unique one! The most visited cave of the Jenolan Caves is Lucas Cave. Inside of Lucas Cave is its highest chamber, ‘The Cathedral’. Because of its size and awesome acoustics, it’s often used for wedding ceremonies, concerts, and recitals.
As long as you’re fit enough to climb all 910 steps of this cave, then you should be good. It’s actually not as daunting as it sounds. There are a lot of stops along the way, where you can stop to admire all of the rock formations. Walking through the entire Lucas Cave will take about one and a half hours.
One thing I did think was cool was that we got to experience complete and total darkness. It’s not the same as when you’re lying on your bed, staring into the ceiling. You still have the faint glow of alarm clocks, cell phones, street lights, the moon, and the stars. But in the cave, you’re just completely shut off from any source of light (aka perfect time to brush up against a friend’s foot or leg and have them freak out).
The Jenolan Caves are about two hour and 45 minute drive from Sydney. If you’re coming from Sydney, the Blue Mountains are kind of on the way. But as I mentioned in my previous post, I really think that you should dedicate an entire day to the mountains. While the caves were cool to see, I wouldn’t say that they are a ‘must see’. To be honest, after walking through for the first half hour, everything starts to look the same. Plus it’s cold and damp. Not to mention, some of the paths are very narrow and you would have to squeeze through. So if you have time to kill, then I would say go all out! Do more than one cave! But if you’re in a time crunch, then skip out on the caves entirely. You won’t be missing out on too much.
