(really) long walks on the beach

If you’re not quite ready to commit to the 6 km walk (or 3.73 miles) from Bondi Beach to Coogee Beach, Bondi to Tamarama Beach is a great way to get a little preview of the coast. If you do decide to do the entire walk, it’ll take about two hours. The path itself is relatively easy to walk on. There are some steps here and there, sprinkled in with a few patches of uneven ground. But other than that, it isn’t too bad – it’s mostly a paved walkway. You’ll get views of Bondi, Tamarama, Bronte, Clovelly, and Coogee beaches. Or if you’re really ambitious, another 70-minute walk after Coogee will get you to Maroubra Beach. On the other hand, if you choose to jump ship somewhere along the way, just walk to the nearest beach and there are buses you can take from there to get to the next beach, or even back to Sydney city center.

Here is an extremely helpful link that tells you exactly what you’ll see on each of the routes. So if there’s something specific you want to see, you can always start your walk at that beach (or whichever beach you like.) You don’t have to start at Bondi.

I only got up to Tamarama when my friends and I called it quits. I know, I know…it’s PITIFUL! A bunch of twenty-somethings can’t even make it past the first beach. But to be fair, we had spent most of the day tanning at Bondi. So we already kind of had that dehydrated-from-the-sun feeling going on. Plus, we had just eaten lunch, so we also had that food coma thing going on. On top of that, it was pretty hot that day so the sun beating down on us didn’t make the walk any easier. I know it sounds like I’m just throwing out a bunch of excuses as to why we’re so pathetic, but I think these are all pretty valid reasons! That being said, the best time to go would probably be in the morning, when it isn’t as hot yet. You’ll also be fully energized, so by the time you’re done with the walk, your reward will be to just lay on the beach and do nothing.

One day, I’ll be back to do the full walk – maybe even get to Maroubra! And then walk all the way back to Bondi! Okay maybe not the back to Bondi part…now I’m just talking crazy!
